Attempt to Poition our Army.—The Corinfh correspondent of the New Orleans Picayune says that a most diabolical attempt was made by the enemy to poison our army in that vicinity. Tli« following is the way it was done: ^ After our army fell back from N&shviile, and while at Murfreesboro’, large 4uantities of qui nine were smuggled through to our lines by per sons who had purchased it from Yankee vendors, and which was sold to the medical purveyors of our army. Fortunately there was no occasion to touch this lot of quinine thus purchased and distributed to the difi'erent surgeons of commands, for a few days, when Surgeon Lawrence, the medical di rector of General Hardee's division, who is a most thoroughly educated and scientific physician and surgeon, had occasion to examine one of the pack ages, and discovering a slight discoloration, applied the chemical tests and found that the quinine was mixed with a large quantity of strychnine and morphine. He immediately apprised the sur- I geons and medical purveyors of the facts, and telegraphed those at a distance. Frcm yashvillt:.—The annexed extract from a private letter, dated Nashville, March 19, will be found interesting: Dear Friend:—Since you left here, things have changed to a very great extent. Fully two- thirds of our best population have gone, aud are now scattered over the cotton States. Their places are filled by the very dregs of society Irom Northern cities. There arc thousands ot mer chants and drummers here from New \"ork, Phila delphia and Cincinnati, and new business houses are being opened here every day by Northern men. Capital.—Many people are boarding up whaf means they have against a rainy day. Is this wiie? Would it not be better to invest a portion of the capital now held by our wealthy men, in fatttories of different kinds, and produce ourselves the articles for which we have been so long fle- pendent upon the North'/ Soap, candles, lei^her, edge-tools, farming utensils, shoe-making, sad dlery, woollen and cotton goods, cars, buttons, pins, needles, iron-ware, outlery and earthell-ware of all kinds, are all in demand, and their manu facture will doubtless pay, if properly managed, even after the war closes. Why is it that our wealthy men do not embark in every speeiss of manufacture demanded by the times? The neg lect to employ their capital in the production of necessary articles, weakens the Confederacy and renders it less able to carry on the war. Such a policy endangers every interest in the land, and may conquer us. If so, what will stocks and promises to pay be worth? Let the people reflect, Raleiyh i^tandard u ^piIE Works of Chas.
